I have a working holidaymaker visa that expires 30/04/2006 (the last day of April).

I have been given a job offer by a local council. In addition to spelling my name incorrectly in the contract, Rolling Eyes the document states, "This is a fixed term appointment ending on 31st March 2006, when your eligibility to work in the UK expires."

Huh? My visa expires on the last day of April, not March.

Upon reading the rules of the working holidaymaker visa, it simply states we're supposed to take a holiday at some point during the two-year period. It does not state that we cannot work during the last month of the visa.

Has my employer made an error? Should I ask them to change the date to 30th April 2006?

Why make waves? My thought on it is that you now know that you will have your last month free and clear to take the holiday of a lifetime, or make alternate plans for staying in the UK if that is what you want. If it was me, I'd stay quiet, start squirreling money away, and start planning my ultimate month long European Vacation.

If I wanted to take time off from my job early, I could just quit. At least if my contract was fixed, I would have the choice.

Believe it or not, some people are here to further their careers, and not just save up money from temp jobs for short vacations around Europe.

I don't know if you have seen this on the UK Visas web site but just in case here is a link:
http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagenam...cid=1018721068240

It simply says that:
There are no restrictions on the type of work you can do as a working holidaymaker.

There is also no restriction on the amount of work that you can do (part-time or full-time), but we do expect you to take a holiday during your stay.

If you are given permission to enter as a working holidaymaker you may also be allowed to switch into Work Permit employment after one year in the UK.

This is also a link to the home office information on the complete rules:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ind/en/home/la...rules/part_4.html

Personally, if you wanted to work right up until the expiration of your visa, I'd ask the employer why the contract onlys goes until the end of March.

Ouch, that was a bit harsh! I wasn't for a second implying that you were here for a tour of Europe. As for furthering careers......I've been there - that's also why I came over here. You mentioned that you have to take a holiday at some point in your 2 year visa, so my point was simply why not make it the last month that you are here?

I have a few friends who are/were here on working Holiday Maker Visas & they found it hard to find someone to sponsor them, to get them the necessary work permit for once their Visa ran out. Maybe that last month might enable you to find something that you really like instead of just accepting the first thing that comes along so that you can stay in the country.
