Working in Canada, Living in the US

Post Mon Nov 08, 2010 2:07 pm

Mi husband has been transferred to the US with an L1 visa. I got an L2 visa and a work permitt. I want to continue working at my current job with a Canadian company. I work virtual (from home) and the only thing I need to have to do my job is my computer and Internet. We have got a house in US. I understand that I will need to file taxes in both countries, for this year I've only spend 60 days in Canada, the rest in the US. My main home will be US with some visits to Canada during the year. Is it possible to continue with my current job and be living the US? for how long? how frequently should I come to Canada?
Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks

Liliana R.

I don't know why you would think you need to file in canada. You live and work in US. You both need to file departure returns for the year you left canada, and then you would only need to report money earned IN canada.

The mere fact that you are being paid by a CDn company does not make the money Cdn-sourced nor necessarily Cdn-taxed.

Follw up with me at forums.serbinski.com, as this is a travel website, not tax.

My salary is paid in Canada, so my taxes are deducted in Canada. I continue doing all my pension and RRSP contributions in Canada.
My husband assignment is for 3 years, so we plan to return after that. does it make any difference?
What about employment insurance. If I get fired, do I have to be present here to claim EI?
Thanks

please post on serbinski.

Your salary is to be paid in the country you are living and working.

Think if you were working in BC for Microsoft. Microsoft would have to pay you as a BC employee, regardless of where their payroll office would be.

Same differnce.
