Working Remotely in Mexico for Canadian Company

Post Sun Nov 06, 2011 9:56 pm

I'm looking for direction on Canadian citizens who live in Mexico but are employed by a Canadian company, where the company exists only on Canadian soil but employees can be anywhere when they work. Any leads on whether this is permissible, tax law, visas, etc. would be eagerly read and appreciated. Thank you!

Not sure what your question is. Be more specific.

In general, if you are employed by a Canadian company, that has an address in Canada and it declares it's income (worldwide) in principle, if you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, you are resposible to pay income tax in Canada.

If you're a resident in Mexico and not Canada and working for a Canadian company, then your issue is not about paying Canadian taxes but Mexican. Canada and Mexico have a treaty to avoid double taxation.

check further links on that site.

In a practical sense, this would have the biggest impact on your visa here. You'll probably want to be here under the rentista type visa, used commonly by retirees. You need to show an income from outside Mexico to obtain it and it doesn't authorize you for work in Mexico (earning from a Mexican source), meaning you are not liable to file a Mexican return.
