Yes. yet another visa qn (457 to PR)

Post Tue Feb 23, 2010 4:12 pm

Hello!
We are currently living in NSW, under a 457 visa, and are currently looking into applying for a PR (as working migrants; both of our skills are required). We would prefer to go through the process without being sponsored by a company. Looking at the online application, we can pick one of two options (onshore applicant or offshore applicant). Of course, we are currently onshore, but the 457 does not appear to be listed as a current visa... so I'm a bit confused which option would apply. The website is a bit convoluted at parts, and I'm not finding much help at the moment. Does anyone have any idea how to do this (without the need to hire a migration agent)??
Thanks in advance!

I couldn't quite figure out what you were asking so I thought I'd try the visa wizard to see what it said.

I suspect that's why you said the 457 wasn't on the list. I didn't see it listed so just picked other. Then the response was that you might be eligible for the 175 permanent visa (which is the right one).

If you are currently in Australia and you want to apply for a permanent one on your own then most likely the 175 independent PR visa is the one you want. Lots of people apply for the 175 onshore while on a 457.

Have a look through here and you'll find other examples:

Ok, thank you! That is what I expected, but wanted to make sure I didn't miss something.
Thanks again.
