Young adult wanting to move to Manchester

Post Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:10 pm

I am eligible for an Ancestry Visa, and I am just trying to figure out how to go about actually moving to England and getting everything ready.
Jobs, Living arrangements, banking.etc. Everything. How much money I should have saved up before going there?
Places that will make employment arrangements before arriving/or amongst arrival?

Any help would be really great.
Thank you.

I would say unless you're in the kind of occupation where international recruitment is common, and that usually means something pretty senior, then you're best off waiting until you're here and looking for work then.

I don't know what the job market in Manchester is like these days, but it's getting tight all over the UK now. In London there's a tradition of employing Aussies, New Zealanders, South Africans and to a lesser extent Canadians, and there's a kind of scene that has sprung up around this including "expat-friendly" job agencies often staffed by other people from these countries.

As far as jobs go my best advice would be to register with monster.co.uk and post your resume up there even if you put your Canadian contact info on the resume you will be surprised how many recruiters will contact you.

I moved back to the UK on the 30th September this year after 8 years in Toronto - about 2 weeks before coming did the monster.co.uk route and had 2 interviews lined up within a couple of weeks of getting back I was back in work by the 10th November.

The Job market in the service sector is slowing up over here - However the IT sector seems to be okay.

Living arrangements should be too hard - do you have family over here you could stay with? If not it might be wise to rent a room for a few months to get settled before looking for an apartment.

Getting a bank account is not hard - I bank with HSBC in Canada and now in the UK I transfer money from the UK back to Canada once a month costs £9 and happens same day - don't know why some people wait 4-5 days to transfer money.
You will not get a debit card (Interac Card) or credit card over here straight away so I would hold on to those Canadian cards.

As to how much money I would aim for at least £1000 - £2000 for each month and anticipate you could be without work for at least 2\3 months.
