Young Canadian, big move.

Post Sun Jun 06, 2010 10:20 pm

Hey,
I'm a second year University student in Calgary and this upcoming year I have finally decided to move back to Birmingham, England. I was "officially" born in Birmingham but moved to Toronto and eventually Calgary when I was about 7-8, it seems like a log time since but I haven't really been able to get Birmingham or England in general off my mind! As I said before, I have made the decision to move back (I have a UK passport, citizenship, blah, blah) and try to start my life again in a place I have always fantasized about. The thing on my mind, what's compelling me to post this, is the emotional stress I will inevitably go through when I leave all my family and friends. I have my non-direct family of about 50 relatives in England which each and every one would put me up but it's obviously not a dad, mom, or brother. Has anyone experienced this on here, and if so, would you be able to give any insight into this situation?

Cheers,
Dillon.

Going through the same situation as you mate, its difficult leaving close family and friends behind for a better life abroad. I learned this when I moved to Australia two years ago, even though I was only there temporarily (8 months) The stress of being away from home, especially over the holidays was extreme to say the least, got really homesick, funny thing though, once I came back last August, I HATED it here. I left Sydney airport thinking how excited I was to be coming home to see my family and friends, and yes I was happy to see them, and happy to have my support group around me again, but I soon got the urge to leave again.

Honestly don't let it get to you, your friends and your family will understand that you are doing this because you feel its in your best interests, if they can't understand that, then they're not worth the stress. That's the easy part, the difficult part is telling yourself that you have family where you're going to, and that there are plenty of friends to be made. Your old friends can still visit you, your family can still visit you, and vice versa. Just keep telling yourself that and you'll be alright. Trust me

Good luck on your travels mate, ever wanna chat just msg me.

Thanks for that man, I think you've got it spot on. Just need to get on with it I suppose and know that I can always see them again, not a goodbye forever deal. I may take you up on that chat once I'm in the UK, who knows, I may need it :)

Hi just thought I'd let you know my experience too....my older brother moved to canada from glasgow when I was 4 and most of my younger years where spent holidaying in London,Ontario but it was never ever a thought of mine that I would move there. When I was 21 my mum retired and we applied for immigration to London, I moved there despite my reservations and my friends worries, and that was over twenty yrs ago....even though I had family there it was a tough transition..there is a big difference between 'holidaying' in a place and actually living there fulltime but the most important thing to remember is that you can always go back to the place you came from but you may not always have the chance to go forward to somewhere new. My first year or so in Canada was hard emotionally in many ways but I was determined not to run back to Glasgow 'with my tail between my legs" so to speak and have made a good life there with good connections so the initial stress was way worth it for me and for my own family, my husband followed me out to Canada and our daughter was born in London so I think you should go for it ...you never know what oppertunity lies there waiting for you .
