Yeah, you can work for the full 2 years. Soon as you start work, you're covered under the national
health insurance too. (You're automatically covered for the second year regardless)
Anyway, you don't have to have a job first. You just have to have the 1600 pounds... I applied for mine earlier this month. They processed it in a day. As long as you have what they ask for, you should get it, no problem.
As for the types of work, there's very few you're not allowed to do. There's lots of info on the site visa4uk site about it, and links.
