Dealing with Loneliness When You're Abroad

Loneliness is a massive problem in the world today.  Not only are we slowly distancing ourselves from other people through jobs that rely on telecommunication, but with marketing and purchasing going to the Internet, we just don't have as many reasons to venture out of our houses.  When you move to a new country, this feeling of separation can be intense.

But there's hope for those that have decided to move their lives abroad.  Loneliness is a condition that is completely curable with a little patience and some hard work.  Even if you're a shyer person, you can still quell the loneliness that you will feel at first.

The first step that you need to take is to head outside of your new home once in a while.  Instead of trying to manage your life from your computer, head to the local market and the local stores to simply be with other people.  You'll be surprised at how many people you will meet in this way, even if you don't try to talk with anyone.

Try to find places that you can interact with others.  Maybe you can take a class at the local university or go to a group for social events.  You're not going to be the only Canadian around, so there will probably be someone who wants to meet someone like you too.  Place an ad on the Internet to see if you can meet anyone to meet up with and explore the city with.

Loneliness can also be a product of not having enough to do.  Try to fill your days with learning about your new home and exploring it.  These activities don't have to cost a lot of money, just a simple walk each day will suffice.  If you want, you can be bolder and try to explore your new city like a tourist, trying to find all of the neatest shops and stores.

When you try to become active in your city, you will find that the loneliness, even any residual homesickness will disappear gradually.  When you start to have new experiences and start to create new memories in your new home, you will find that you are more comfortable than you were in the beginning.  This allows you to have more to share with your friends and family back home, allowing you to make your experience something that everyone can enjoy.

Living abroad is a big change for everyone - use it to start a whole new set of memories.
