Top 10 Things to know before you move to the US

No matter where you end up moving, you will want to know as much as you can before you head out the door. When you’re planning on moving to the United States, there are a few things that you might want to keep in mind, though if you’re moving from Canada, the transition probably won’t be unlike moving across the territories.

Here are ten basic things that you will want to keep in mind:

  1. Immigration has gotten more difficult – You will want to make sure that you are checking with US immigration to see what you need to do before you even consider moving. Since 9/11/2001, rules have been tightened and continue to change daily.
  2. There are plenty of climates to choose from – If you’re picky about weather, you can find just about anything in the US.
  3. Bigger cities aren’t family friendly – When you’re looking for a place to raise a family, bigger cities aren’t necessarily the best choice. Try smaller cities that are just outside of metropolitan areas.
  4. Less populated areas are less expensive – When budget is a concern, head to smaller towns and less populated areas. Popular places like California and New York are more expensive because everyone wants to live there.
  5. Prices are moderate anywhere – Even if you live in a large city, you can still find reasonable rents and prices on household goods. You just might have to look more.
  6. There are plenty of groups and resources for new neighbours – No matter where you live, you can find groups that will welcome new inhabitants with open arms.
  7. Cars are the best way to get around – Unless the city that you’re moving into has a well-established public transit system, driving is the best way to get from one point to another.
  8. Jobs are available when you look for them – There are plenty of jobs, though many are minimum wage, if you’re looking for employment. Try Internet advertisements and local newspapers for listings.
  9. Health care is expensive – If you have to pay for US health insurance, you will find that it’s quite expensive, but out of pocket costs are even higher.
  10. Help is always around – The US has many service providers that can help you with any questions that you have, whenever you have them.

The US can be a welcoming place for any family, but when you reach out to what is available, you will find out just how readily available these services are.
