To it's credit, Bangladesh has made enormous environmental strides, including banning plastic bags, as well as banning petrol and diesel vehicles in major urban areas. They have created a number of National Parks and preserves, making them a global leader in environmental policies.

Bangladesh has also seen quite a bit of political conflict in the recent years. Even today, non essential travel is discouraged in the Chittagong Hill Tracts area, due to politically motivated kidnappings and other violence.

You’ll find Bangladesh to be one of the most beautiful places you’ve visited. It is largely unspoiled, boasting many crystal clear lakes, tropical rainforests and lush tea gardens. The government and the people of Bangladesh have made the preservation of this beautiful land a top priority.

Visiting the National Parks is a must when traveling in Bangladesh. Sundarbans National Park is filled with tigers and some interesting swamps, unusual to this part of the world. You’ll also want to enjoy the glorious beaches, particularly those at Cox Bazar. In fact, if you love the outdoors, you’ll find Bangladesh to be one of your favorite places on earth. You can see freshwater dolphins, enormous whales, and visit gorgeous tea plantations.

Bangladesh is also a bird watcher’s paradise. Of the 525 recorded species of bird, you can find 350 in Bangladesh. You’ll also find lots of tigers, elephants, leopards, jackals and rhesus monkeys here.

For Westerners, traveling directly to Bangladesh can be very expensive. You’ll save money by going to India first, though this will require an Indian Visa. Once you reach India, you can travel by land into Bangladesh for a fraction of what air fare would cost. Dhaka is a great city for a home base, and entry here via India is simple.

Dhaka and other large cities offer beautiful large hotels, including some Western chains. In smaller areas of the country you’ll find mostly small guest houses and hostels. Srimangal is the heart of tea country, and you’ll find lots of great guesthouses right in the tea growing areas.
