Bhutan was once one of the most isolated places in the world. But, today, it is much more accessible, though there are many restrictions and travel to Bhutan can get very expensive. For example, unless you are an Indian national, you must enter and exit Bhutan on a Druk Air flight.

As a result, Bhutan is one of the most expensive areas to travel, because they require that each traveler pay a minimum of $200 per day. Though the fee is set, it is all inclusive and the itinerary and travel arrangements are open. You can still travel where you want and with whom you want, but you must pay the minimum fee.

Bhutan is a country that has maintained its roots and culture. The area is heavily Buddhist and there are many beautiful Buddhist historical sites, such as the undisturbed Tibetan culture of Bumthang Dzongkhag that you’ll want to visit. Here you’ll find the city of Jakar, which has a wonderful local trading center in spite of the fact that it is literally a one street town. This is a great home base for trekking into the beautiful small villages in the nearby valleys.

Of course, no visit to Bhutan would be complete without a Himalayan adventure. The eastern side of the mountain range is gorgeous and you’ll find plenty of guides available to help you venture as far into the mountain range as you’re prepared for.

Druk Air, has virtually no competition, so the tickets are quite expensive. You’ll likely enter Bhutan in the city of Paro. If you’re traveling from North America, the best city to connect to Druk Air is Bangkok. If you’re traveling from Europe, Delhi is the best place to connect.

Larger cities like Paro will offer larger hotels as well as smaller accommodations with a local flavor. Once you reach the smaller villages, accommodations will mostly be small guesthouses.
