Burma Myanmar travel tips & advice

Few tourists travel to this country today, as it has been effectively boycotted by the Western world for its tyrannical government. Elections were held in 1989, but military rulers refused to hand over the government to the democratically elected officials. Since, then the country has been under one of the most oppressive and brutal illegal tyrannies in history.

However, those who do choose to travel here are in for a beautiful and unspoiled land along with generous and friendly people, who are in no way representative of the brutal government that they endure. You’ll find food and transportation costs, once inside the country, to be very low, compared to the Western world.

Burma/Myanmar is a beautiful country, with pristine beaches on the Bay of Bengal, and with golden Buddha statues bathed every morning as the sun breaks.

A visit to Mandalay should definitely be on your agenda, too. This active city is the second largest in Burma/Myanmar and thrives, at least according to rumor, from its trade in rubies, jade and heroin. It is also home to many Buddhist monks, and is rich in Buddhist history. Just outside of Mandalay, you’ll find plenty of ancient cities for exploration, too.

Many travelers also enjoy Maymyo, a town that is very reminiscent of old England. There are beautiful homes here, and a wonderful little downtown. Take a ride in a miniature wagon led by a pony, rather than a traditional taxi.
