Nepal is known primarily for being home to the world’s highest mountain peak, Mount Everest. But, it is actually home to eight out of ten of the world’s highest mountains, with Everest being the highest. The country’s tourism industry relies heavily on Mt. Everest and the rest of the Himalayan Mountains for its tourist trade. While the mountain regions of Nepal are quiet and dedicated to mountain trekking, the southern part of the nation is very urban.
In addition to trekking the Himalayas while you’re here, you must also visit the Royal Chitwan National Park, a 932 km nature preserve that is home to the endangered one horned Indian rhino as well as tigers, leopards and rare Gangetic dolphins.
Tansen is also a great place to visit on your journey of Nepal. Here you’ll find ancient temples and traditional villages, and all are gateways into the Himalayas for trekking enthusiasts.
Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha, and you’ll find peace and tranquility, along with a plethora of monasteries in this town. Though this is a popular town for pilgrimages, it does not receive the onslaught of those seeking peace and meditation that you might expect.
A visit to Bhaktapur is also in order if you’re interested in native crafts. This town, with its cobblestone streets is home to many craftsmen making and selling pottery, woodcarving and woven items. You’re certain to enjoy watching the craftsman create their wares, and you’re likely to want to take some home, too.
Kathmandu was Nepal’s only international airport, though Bhairahawa airport is in the process of being upgraded to Lumbini International Airport, as well. There are not a lot of international flights into Nepal, so book early.
