San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and boasts several interesting museums and is the main transportation hub for getting around the rest of the country. Some of the highlights include the Museo Nacional and the Museo de Jade which features the largest collection of jade artwork from the Americas. The Teatro Nacional is the opera house and arguably the most beautiful building in the city.
Of course the main draw to Costa Rica are the beautiful beaches and stunning jungle forests. The Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal has an impressively active volcano that's well worth the hike to see. There are many other wildlife reserves and national parks all throughout Costa Rica which make for great hiking and exploring possibilities.
Look to spend around $10-15 US per night for a cheap hotel, though you can certainly spend more. Many people offer condo rentals as well that you can find posted all over the place, and in local newspapers as well.
