The island of Chuuk is a haven of sparkling blue lagoons. They invite you to climb in so you can wash the worries of your world away. The lagoons house old shipwrecks from World War II, some of which are accessible by both diving and snorkeling. This area is thought to be one of the best dive places in the world.

For a taste of true Micronesian culture, go to the island of Yap. Here, the locals still trade their wares and services using the same ancient, old stone currency their ancestors did. Traditional garb is still worn by some locals, and the distinctive music of the islands can be heard.

On the Marshall Islands there’s an array of cuisine to taste; Chinese and Korean as well as Vietnamese, Japanese, Western and of course, Marshallese. These types of foods can be found throughout the Marshall Islands, but when it comes to alcohol, some of the islands forbid it. Be sure to check with your guide or the locals when you arrive.

Shopping is best on Majuro. There’s a nice assortment of jewelry, handbags and purses, and other items made out of natural materials like shells, wood, woven grasses and stone.

The Northern Mariana Islands are a beautiful natural tapestry of nature—magnificent mountains, beautiful bays, dark caves and rocky cliffs. While you’re there, try some Kelaguin, one of the island’s specialties. It’s a mixture of diced chicken and fresh shredded coconut with thinly sliced pieces of coconut on the side for dipping in a spicy pepper sauce.

Hotels located among the islands are mainly found in the capital cities, some even have resort-style accommodations. There’s no official camping areas, but with landowner permission you may camp on their land. There are also beautiful, rustic thatched cottages with very limited facilities.
