gluten free diet foods in Hungary and Greece

I have not seen anyone else contributing to this topic, but I thought I would tell you about my experiences as a celiac traveling in Hungary and Greece. The good news is that you do very well in Hungary if you are on a gluten free diet. Most of the large grocery chains, such as Tesco carry a lot of good food, fresh bread, pasta etc. You can even find bread and other stuff at DM, which strangely is a German drugstore chain. And there is a new frozen product line, which is available at Spar (German), Cora (Spanish) and Match (French) supermarkets. There are also a number of exclusive gluten free stores in Budapest, where you can shop confidently for supplies. The Hungarian Celiac Society is very active in Hungary and their web site is available in English. You can even request gluten free menu at McDonald's and their fries in Europe are not coated in flour, so they will not make you sick.
Greece is another matter. First of all, Greeks in general don't know much about this illness and the whole country seems to live in a cloud of wheat flour and bread crumbs. Almost without exception, I got sick after we ate out. If at all possible, take supplies with you on your trip. One more small note: I was traveling back home though Heathrow and found out from information that there are a number of restaurants that provide gluten free food on request and you can always buy some great fruit salad and other salads from Marks and Spencer's which you find on the arrivals level. If you end up at departures level, you will have to go through security, but you can request to be escorted out to the arrivals level. Good luck!

to Nancy11, if you need any more info on gluten free food and dining in Hungary, let me know, I can probably help.

one more note to Nancy11, there is a website called glutenfreetravelsite.com, if you click on read reviews, and again on Europe and choose Central Eastern Europe, you will find a number of reviews of restaurants and shopping for gluten free foods in Hungary (some of those reviews are mine)

I have been eating a delicious, healthy chocolate that is gluten free, lactose free and caffeine free..it doesn't get any healthier than that..I am loving it. This chocolate also has the highest antioxidants of any foods because it is not cooked..one chocolate is equal to 4 pints of blueberries.
They also have a weight loss shake and cookie..so if you are looking for a healthy alternative for a snack this one is a 9 out of 10...

Hello,
If anyone can help me...i want to make a visit next week in Hungary (and maybe in Austria)to see the gluten free market.
i come from Bucharest,Romania and this kind of market is at it's beginning.
i intend to start a business with this kind of products and not only,i want to see if i will come back with new ideas for a personal business (with chain stores and maybe online).
so i would appreciate if i will get some piece of advice (which is the biggest brand and more).
