Bringing my own car to US

Post Sat Jul 25, 2015 3:03 pm

Hello,

I just bought a used 2007 Ford Fusion SEL in Ontario and have had an Ontario license for 7 years. I am going to New York State on a visa to study for 3 years and want to drive my car down to NY state to use for commuting to school. I want to register it and get the insurance plates all in the US.

The CBP website is very confusing and I am still very unclear about the process of doing this legally. Could somebody please walk me through step-by-step of how I should go about doing this so that it is all legal and I would not have problems down in the NY state.

Thank you very much!

Thank you for your reply. I'll check if my car meets those standards.

I understand that I never really become a resident of the state, even though I have an apartment there for 3 years. However, would you happen to know if it is still possible to register the car/get plates/insurance even though I am NOT a "resident" of the state?

Thanks again.
