Mauritius travel tips & advice

Mauritius is a small island east of Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean. There are 9 districts and three dependencies (separate islands) that make up the area. The capital is Port Louis. A lot of cultures have made Mauritius their home, which explains why there are three different languages that are mainly spoken in Mauritius. Creole is the number one language, but French and English follow closely. Natives to the Arab countries landed in the 9th century; it was then to become a Dutch colony, then a French colony; next came the British which colonized the island for a time, and now it is considered to be an Independent and a Republic.

At this time, most countries do not need a visa to gain entrance to this island paradise but is a good idea to make sure your passport has at least six months before expiration. Also, visitors must show proof of accommodations to the immigration office upon arrival.

While air travel is the more common mode of transportation, you can gain access to the island via ship. Most ships are used for cargo, however there are some cruise lines that are starting trips through the Indian Ocean and stopping at Mauritius. There is a line that travels from Madagascar to Mauritius, but it is more expensive and a much longer journey.

Once you gain access to the island then you can travel to the surrounding areas using a small plane, helicopter, car rental, the regulated yellow-sticker taxis, or buses.
