Mozambique is located on the coast of the Indian Ocean. South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland border it, too. There are 10 provinces that can be grouped into the three areas of Northern, Central, and Southern Mozambique.

Five centuries of Portuguese civilization ended with independence in 1975. This, along with several other factors, has had a significant impact on the country, including:

  • Economic dependence on South Africa
  • Severe drought
  • Prolonged civil war
  • Heavy flooding in 1999 and 2000

The area is slowly recovering from all this unrest and trying to build some form of stability, including tourism.

It is best to obtain all visas before traveling to the country. There is rumor that you can get them at the airports, but it is not a good idea to rely on that information. Your embassy will be able to assist you with obtaining a travel visa.

Train travel is quite involved and not at all easy. The long trip becomes more challenging because it is normal for passenger trains to have to stop and unload all passengers because the next part of the line is only for freight. Also included in the trip is hiking from one border stop to the next before it closes, however they do have a post house for those who get stuck.
