Namibia is located in Southern Africa. South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, and the Atlantic Ocean border it. It was formerly a colony of Germany, but after WWI it was administered by South Africa by a mandate under the League of Nations. After WWII it was annexed as a province of South Africa, however a guerilla war for independence was launched by the South West Africa People’s Organization in 1966. Independence wasn’t achieved until 1990.

The capital of Namibia is Windhoek. There are nine different languages spoken in this country; one of them consists of a series of clicks that is completely native to the English speaking community.

Travelers from most European countries and the United States may enter Namibia for up to three months without a travel visa. However, other countries need to obtain a visa before doing so. It is always advisable to contact the embassy to learn of any changes in regulations.

Buses, trains, and cars are common forms of transportation. There are nine common border posts to Namibia. They are in the countries of:

  • Angola
  • Botswana
  • South Africa
  • Zambia

Within the country, the roads are very good. The primary roads are paved while the secondary roads are well graded. All-wheel drive vehicles are not needed unless you are traveling the tertiary roads or the Skeleton Coast. Take note that nighttime driving is not suggested due to the amount of wild animals that travel the roadways.
