Guyana travel tips & advice

Guyana is a country in northeast South America. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Venezuela, and Brazil. Guyana means “land of many waters” and its capital is Georgetown. Originally a Dutch colony in the 17th century, then taken by the British in 1815, Guyana claimed its independence in 1966 from the United Kingdom. It is a mostly English-speaking country with a few local dialects among the locals.

The weather is very tropical, being hot and humid. There are two rainy seasons: May to mid-August and mid-November to mid-January. A few natural destinations that are definitely worth checking out include:

  • Kaieteur Falls, which is five times larger the Niagara Falls
  • Kanuka Mountains
  • Shell Beach

When traveling to a different country it is wise to learn all you can before finding out things the hard way. Guyana is not immune to some of the common pitfalls of popular travel destinations:

  • Notorious for its petty crimes, be sure not to travel alone. There is safety in numbers.
  • Stay away from the area of Buxton unless you know someone who has traveled there and is familiar with that area. There is a predominate crime and drug rate.
  • The interior areas are safe, friendly, and tourists are well received.
  • Do not drink the local water. Always request bottled water, with the sealed cap on.
  • Receive immunizations for yellow fever and bring strong mosquito repellent.
